CMU baseball ended its 13-game losing streak this past weekend as it went 1-2 in its series with the Miami Redhawks.

Central Michigan’s overall record stands at 4-16 while its Mid-American Conference record stands at 1-5.

Game 1

The first game was a gritty low-scoring battle with the Chippewas striking first off of an RBI from freshman left fielder Mikey Murphy.

Four scoreless innings went by until redshirt freshman Carter Campau bunted a ground ball out to third base that brought in senior center fielder Jacob Donahue for the score.

Two more scoreless innings went by and the Chippewas had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Graduate student pitcher Bryce Hellgeth looked to end the game on the mound.

After shutting the Redhawks out for the first eight innings, CMU failed to contain them in the ninth as the Chippewas gave up three runs and let the game slip through their fingers, 3-2.

Game 2

Similar to game one, Central Michigan struck first blood in the second game as it got out to an early 3-0 start in the second. The Redhawks responded in the third with two runs including a solo homer.

With the Chippewas leading 3-2, they extended their lead to 5-2 after an error from the Redhawks brought in a runner as well as a solo home run to left field from senior first baseman Danny Wuestenfeld.

MU could not be stopped the rest of the way, scoring 13 runs in three innings as CMU went on to lose 15-6.

Game 3

After two scoreless innings, the Chippewas got out to a 3-0 lead after three RBIs in the third and fourth. They extended their lead to four after an RBI from senior third baseman Ely Stuart.

After pushing the lead to five in the eighth, the Redhawks responded with two runs of their own.

It wouldn’t matter though as the ninth inning went scoreless and CMU would take the victory 5-2 and secure its first MAC win of the season.

The Chippewas return to Mount Pleasant for their home opener on Wednesday as they take on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at 3 p.m.
