Outreach and Engagement chairperson Ashley Harvey worked with her committee to draft emails pushing their upcoming Hack-a-thon event at the Student Government Association meeting on March 11.

The event, which takes place from April 5 to April 6, is a 24-hour problem solving event in which students in small groups will work together to solve one of three sustainability problems. The committee is partnering with Central Sustainability, as well as Patrick Kinnicutt, the chairperson for the computer science department, to bring the event to life.

“It will be a goofy, better version of an all-nighter where you’re not stressed about an exam the next day,” Harvey said.

Currently, the event has no participants signed up for it. As a result, Harvey created an email template live during her committee meeting and encouraged members to send them to their professors. She said that they could encourage their professors to show it to their classes and get participants to sign up that way.

“This is kind of like a we’re gonna get what we’re gonna get moment,” she said. “But I think we’re gonna be able to pull it together.”

The event will take place in Dow Hall and Pearce Hall, and a third location is still being finalized. Food will be provided for participants, and students can come and go as they please during the 24 hour period. Winners of the competition will also receive monetary prizes, though the final amounts are still being determined.

Team building with House of Representatives

The House of Representatives participated in two team building activities with their subcommittees during their meeting.

House Speaker Josh Boman said he did these activities to help members focus and be more proactive in the House.

“I felt like during some of our meetings everyone wasn't engaged” he said. “This is a way to make sure they're involved and get to know each other better.”

The two activities were as follows:

  • A “Find Someone Who” scavenger hunt and
  • Building a container out of straws and tape to support a golf ball dropped from 10 feet.

Each activity was set on roughly five minute timers. Representatives talked amongst themselves and worked together to achieve their goals.

“It was pretty cool,” said Alexandru Ciolac, a freshman who participated in the activities. “I liked working with others to accomplish the goals.”

In Other Events:

  • Mitchell Basham, the Director of Operations hosting in place of Vice President Ryan Biller, told students that the 35th annual Pow wow event is happening on March 22. He said the event is open to the public to attend, and volunteer applications will be coming soon.
  • Elections Director Mackenzye Pettit said that everyone that filled out a candidacy form made the ballot. The elections committee is working on creating a meet the candidate event at 7 p.m on March 18. A location is still being determined.
  • Student Budget Allocation Committee applications for funding registered student organizations close on March 25. Basham said there is a “good amount of money left” and encouraged students in RSOs to apply for it first instead of using money out of pocket.
  • The Central Michigan Astronomy Club is hosting a solar eclipse roadtrip to the University of Toledo on April 8. Students will travel via bus to the university and view the total solar eclipse as it happens. The trip costs $40 to attend. Those interested can reach out to student Savannah Limarenko via email at limar1sj@cmich.edu with questions.
  • Spectrum is hosting a Pride Prom for LGBTQ students at 6 p.m on March 16 in the University Center Rotunda. The event will include music, food, photo booths and fun events such as a massive Kahoot game. Students interested in attending can RSVP on Spectrum’s Engage page
