Mt. Pleasant hydrant flushing to begin Sept. 8, may cause water changes

The City of Mt. Pleasant will begin flushing water hydrants north of High Street starting Sept. 8 as part of its annual fall maintenance.
The work, which runs through late October, could cause brief drops in water pressure, minor discoloration or an odor for properties within flushing zones, according to Mt. Pleasant's water distribution center. In a press release, officials stated the water remains safe to drink, but residents are encouraged to remove faucet aerators and run the tap until the water is clear if any discoloration occurs.
Officials said hydrant flushing is a routine process that helps maintain water quality and infrastructure. According to a press release, water may pool in the streets during the process, especially in areas with poor drainage. The city advises drivers to avoid standing water and travel with caution.
To reduce excess runoff and prevent clogging, city officials are reminding residents and landscaping companies not to rake leaves into streets until after Oct. 27.
The flushing schedule is subject to change, but will begin in neighborhoods near Broadway and Brown streets the week of Sept. 8. Additional areas include:
- Sept. 15: Broadway to Pickard Street, Packard to Bradley
- Sept. 22: High and Adams north to Pickard
- Sept. 29: Bellows to Pickard, Oak to Main
- Oct. 6: High to Pickard, Kinney to Mission
- Oct. 13: Pickard to River Road, Kinney to Brown
- Oct. 20: High to Pickard, Bradley to Harris
