SGA swears in elected officials during the first meeting of the semester

Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association swore in its operational cabinet, committee chairs, senators and its speaker of the house for their first meeting of the academic year.
SGA President Akua Acheampong said the first meeting is always busy.
“There is a lot of work to be done this year, and trying to get positions filled is a great way to start,” Acheampong said. “It’s a great way to give people enough time to adjust, enough time to get more information.”
The meeting started with the swearing in of SGA’s new executive staff and committee chairs.

“Anything with the academic experience, policies, curricula, anything of concern with syllabuses, come to me,” said Dziko. “Talk about it, talk about your concerns. I’m here for you.”
After chairs introduced themselves to the association, Cooley held an election for the SGA’s Senate and Student Budget Allocation Committee (SBAC).

Burke, who attends CMU virtually, said she wanted to run for CMU students who are primarily online.
“There's not a lot of opportunities for us to voice our concerns,” Burke said.
To end the meeting, SGA’s House of Representatives elected Senior Itzel Neri, who has served in RSOs such as Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), as this year’s speaker of the house.
Acheampong said that students can expect “productivity, engagement and making change.”
In other news:
- SGA approved their 2026 budget during the meeting. The association has $28,000 in funds that is distributed to different roles, committees and events.
