CMU field hockey goes 1-1 on the weekend


Within 28 seconds into the game, University of Massachusetts’s freshman middle Sophie Kent scored a goal. The goal was assisted by sophomore forward Eliana Sherwood. 

UMass started the win early into the game, as they defeated Central Michigan field hockey 2-0 at Amherst, Mass on Oct. 3. 

In the second period of the game, UMass kept the ball on their side the entire time. The team scored their second goal of the game within 30 seconds of the second period. UMass senior defense/middle Mia Smith scored, with an assist by freshman forward Emily Barrett. 

The Chippewas graduate goalkeeper Ashley Cogger stayed busy with 11 saves, a record high for Cogger. But CMU’s players could only get four shots, two of which were on goal by sophomore forward Carolena Ryon and senior forward Mallory Camryn. This was the Chippewas first game of the season without any scores. 

Game 2 

CMU traveled to Worchester, Massachusetts to play against Merrimack on Oct. 5 following their loss to UMass. 

The Chippewas held their ground against Merrimack by defeating them 5-0. CMU’s first goal was nine minutes into the second period by junior defense Hailey Bainer, with an assist by junior middle forward Annabelle Cotroneo. 

The goal was followed by a second goal a minute later for the Chippewas by freshman middle forward Mora Rulli, assisted by Bainer. Both teams had various substitutions throughout the entire game, with nine substitutions for CMU and six substitutions for Merrimack. 

Central Michigan’s third goal was five minutes into the third quarter by Camryn. With four minutes left in the game, the last two goals were scored by sophomore middle forward Peyton Pallman, with another assist by Camryn.

The Chippewas totaled 25 shots, 15 of which were on goal, with 6 saves by sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Billig and Cogger. Merrimack totaled 11 shots, 6 of which were on goal, with 9 saves by senior goalkeeper Isabelle Gardiner. 

CMU will play Appalachian State on Oct. 10 at Cristy Freese Field at 1 p.m.
