During the Student Government Association (SGA) meeting on Oct. 27, Carnell Poindexter III discussed the discrepancies with the Student Budget Allocation Committee (SBAC).

“I do want to say that that is really nobody’s fault, if you do want to blame someone, blame me,” Poindexter said.

The discrepancies were that the SBAC application was vague, without enough explanation of how to get funding.

The SBAC funds projects and conferences for RSOs on campus. In his presentation, Poindexter discussed how to apply for funding for these funds, which is through Engage Central.

“We are not going to move to deny stuff,” Poindexter said about SBAC normally accepting funding, unless there is not enough information on the application.

SGA also raised concerns about the boil water advisory.

“I saw some folks asking about the water situation. It is just in Towers,” Erica Johnson, the SGA Advisor, said. “There is water at the front desk; all the other buildings on campus are fine.”

Praising student organizations, resources

The SGA Vice President, Kathryn House, announced the registered student organization (RSO) of the week. It was Central Paws, a volunteer animal advocacy RSO on campus, with weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

“Our mission statement is we speak for those who cannot,” Dallas Ruelan, SGA Representative for Central Paws, said.

The Resource of the Month is still Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates (SAPA), a paraprofessional student organization with a 24/7 crisis line.

The SAPA Q+A answers questions explaining that SAPA is a confidential resource, there will be applications open in November to become an advocate, domestic violence is relatively common in different forms, it is completely free to talk to an advocate, advocates go through 60 hours of paid training per year and being an advocate is a volunteer basis.

“Anyone can be a SAPA as long as you’re a decent person,” Emma O’Neil, a Sexual Agression Peer Advocate, said.

House also announced the SGA weekly pop-out for the Pre-Physical Therapy RSO on Oct. 28 in Health Professions 2023.
