Snow problem? Staying safe on campus and the road this winter
As winter weather sets in across Michigan, Officer David Coffman with the Mount Pleasant Police Department reminds that driving slowly is the best way to get around in slick conditions.
"Increase your following distance, avoid sudden movements like abrupt acceleration, braking and steering," he said. "It's wise to clear all ice (and) snow from your car before driving and keep your gas tank above 1/4 full."
The Michigan Department of Transportation website also includes the following travel safety tips:
- Make sure everyone in the car is buckled.
- Drive sober; stay awake and alert.
- Watch for deer, especially on the roads with a speed limit of 55 mph and between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., weekends and 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on weekdays.
- Be courteous to other drivers.
When not driving, winter walking tips can help prevent falls, according to Purdue University. Some of the things to keep in mind are:
- Wear proper footwear: Shoes or boots with good traction can help prevent slips.
- Take small steps: Walk slowly and avoid rushing between classes.
- Stay on cleared paths: Stick to salted and plowed walkways whenever possible.
- Use handrails: Hold onto railings on stairs or ramps for stability.
- Be cautious near buildings: Watch for falling snow or ice from rooftops.
Before heading home for winter break, students should make sure both their vehicle and travel plans are winter-ready. It is important to check your car, monitor the weather and notify friends and family about your route, according to AAA.
If you are stranded while driving, AAA recommends staying with your car as it provides a temporary shelter, insulating your body from cold, tying a brightly colored cloth to the antenna and making sure the exhaust pipe isn't clogged.
The National Weather Service provides a "Winter Car Kit" on their website to help people know what to have in their car during the frigid weather. Some of the items listed are warm gloves, a first aid kit, jumper cables, a tire iron, a cellphone charger, kitty litter and others.
