SGA elects speaker of the house
Student Body Treasurer Christian Dunn announces Ella Swenson beating Kaunye Flowers for speaker of the house position during Feb. 9 meeting.
Editor's note: Ella Swenson is Central Michigan Life's account manager. This did not influence the reporting in any way.
Ella Swenson was voted as the Student Government Association (SGA) speaker of the house on Feb. 9 after tying with Kaunye Flowers upon the initial vote.
“I'm grateful for this opportunity, and I'm excited to work closely with all these organizations because I'm passionate about representing students and having diversity across campus,” Swenson said.
The position was open to Registered Student Organization (RSO) representatives. She ran against Flowers and Samantha Prince. Swenson became interested in the position after historian London Hill presented the opportunity to her.
“As someone who is a leadership advancement scholar, I have those natural leadership tendencies, and I really wanted to exercise them and put them to good use, using my position of power to give a platform to others and make our campus better,” Swenson said.
As speaker of the house, she will:
- Handle onboarding and training of new RSO representatives
- Encourage and promote the creation of legislation
- Run house meetings
- Serve as a chairperson on the Student Budget Allocation Committee
- Meet with the vice president twice a month
She will also receive a $300 stipend per semester. Swenson plans to focus on giving RSOs proper funding for events and platforms to market their organizations.
SGA still has associate justice positions available this semester. Students who filled out the intent of candidacy form for the 2026-2027 school year will hear if they are eligible on Feb. 11.
