It took just over five hours for Central Michigan’s baseball team to reach victory against the Mercyhurst Lakers, 18-14, on Mar. 10. Not a bad way for fans of the Chippewas to spend a Tuesday afternoon.

By no means was it a clean game, and CMU conceded 20 walks from a total of 10 pitchers. It would also take two rain delays to keep this game from finally reaching its conclusion.

Apart from both teams exchanging one run apiece in the second, the game was quiet to begin with. It wouldn’t take long for Central Michigan to find its offense, as outfielder Harrison Bowman blasted a home run to open an eight-run inning for the Chippewas in the fifth.

Three players were hit by a pitch from Mercyhurst’s pitchers this inning, and a total of 10 CMU players would be hit by pitches throughout the ballgame.

Down 9-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Lakers rolled to twelve unanswered runs to take control of the game.

CMU first baseman Brady Krcziok ended the drought with an immediate home run to open the eighth inning. The Chippewas then tacked on two more, yet Mercyhurst’s Riley Ames sent one out of the park to keep the advantage in their favor, 14-12.

However, this Central Michigan team has shown an inability to surrender this season, and it scored six runs to steal away the win.

Max Hammond, the 10th and final pitcher for the Chippewas, stood his ground to close out the ninth. He allowed no hits in his only inning, and a ground ball out to first ended this non-conference showdown.

Looking ahead, Central Michigan’s road game against Youngstown State has been postponed to a later, unconfirmed date. In the meantime, they will take on Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State in a three-game series beginning Mar. 13.
