A new era has begun for the Central Michigan Division I club hockey program, with Liam Kenney taking over as the next head coach.

The team announced the hiring Thursday afternoon through a post on social media.

“Known for his player-first approach and commitment to Compete, Composure, Commitment, and Class – the future is fast, competitive, and built the right way!” the team wrote in the post.

Kenney previously coached at Canton High School, as well as serving as an assistant coach at Concordia University’s D-I American Club Hockey Association (ACHA) program.

CMU faced a bumpy road in 2025, finishing their campaign at 3-26 in their first year at the D-I level in the ACHA. The program parted ways with head coach Doug Wickstrom on Oct. 27, and Brittany Knopp served as the interim for the remainder of the year.

With Kenney’s hire, the program can officially look forward to building a winning team ahead of its season beginning in the 2026 fall semester.
