SGA swears in 107th executive board
Newly elected Student Body President Zainab Naaz talks about her journey to Central Michigan University and the Student Government Association after being sworn in on April 27.
The Student Government Association’s (SGA) 107th executive board was sworn in at the association’s inauguration and awards ceremony on April 27.
This summer and next school year, Zainab Naaz, Fatima Malik and Sophia Laurain will take over as student body president, vice president and treasurer. The students who held their respective roles this academic year each gave advice before swearing them in.
“I encourage you to lead with integrity, to support one another and to, first and foremost, always remember why you chose to start this journey in the first place,” outgoing Student Body Vice President Kathryn House said. “Because at the end of the day, leadership is not defined by titles or moments on stage like this, but it's defined by the impact you leave behind.”
Returning Associate Justice Allison Vander Slik and Senator Aiden Partenio were also sworn in. Naaz ended the ceremony by giving her first speech as president.
“To the student body, thank you for trusting me with this responsibility," Naaz said. "Thank you for believing in me, even if some of you are still getting to know me. Thank you for showing up, not just for me, but for this campus, for each other and for the kind of community we are building together.”
SGA’s advisor Erica Johnson awarded the 106th executive board for their work with the association while wishing them luck with their future.
“I just wanted to say on behalf of all of us, thank you for your time, for your energy, for your resilience and for your leadership,” she said.
Outgoing Student Body President Akua Acheampong addressed SGA members, reflecting on her personal growth during her term and thanking them for their involvement this year.
"I am grateful for all the lessons that I've learned and for all the connections that I've made, and for every single thing that we have accomplished this year," she said.
Outgoing Treasurer Christian Dunn and House also recognized cabinet and general board members for their roles in SGA.
“I am beyond excited to build something meaningful, something inclusive, something lasting altogether,” Naaz said. “As your SGA president, I promise to lead with intention, inclusivity and with accountability. I promise to listen before I act and to represent before I decide, and to always remember that leadership is not about power. It's about service.”
