Senator Aiden Partenio explains the legislation he authored to the Student Government Association’s representatives on April 13.

The Student Government Association’s (SGA) House passed three pieces of legislation on April 13. The documents were resolutions authored by senator Aiden Partenio to:

  • Phase out non-flavored bottled water sales on campus
  • Open Merrill Virtual Food Hall on Fridays
  • Condemn political violence in the United States

The legislation will be passed officially once the Student Body President Akua Acheampong signs them. Student Body Vice President Kathryn House said she and Acheampong will discuss the pieces of legislation passed at the next Board of Trustees meeting on April 23.

“SGA resolutions are non-binding,” Elections Director Carson Cooley said. “So, if it gets passed, this doesn’t automatically mean Merrill is open [on Fridays] in X amount of years. This is just to say students want to see it open on Fridays.”

Registered Student Organization representatives voted to pass the legislation. The Senate passed the legislation on March 23.

Representatives asked Partenio questions about logistics regarding practicality, budgeting and the purpose of each piece of legislation if passed before making their decisions.

In other news:

The SGA judicial branch canceled a hearing that was supposed to occur on April 13 about Shirin Umarova’s removal as an associate justice. The branch said that it is within Acheampong’s power to make that decision.

“The reason why I wanted the hearing was not even for the result, but to defend myself,” Umarova said. “The removal is public, but there is nothing on my defense.”
