The Central Michigan University Police Department Chief Cameron Wassman said the police are investigating the social media comments incident.

An individual has made numerous comments on both Central Michigan University’s and Central Michigan Life’s social media, leaving some students concerned about campus safety.

The police have identified the individual, but no arrests have been made at this point, Wassman said.

According to Wassman, when the police get information that can be considered threatening or concerning, they evaluate the details and determine whether it reaches the level of a direct threat or an imminent act of violence, Wassman said.

“It's certainly concerning,” Wassman said regarding the comments. “There's no argument there. But as part of our investigation, we need to look at what other comments were made in their totality, we have to look at ... whether they have the means, the opportunity to carry out whatever things they say. And again, it's just not to that level.

“I'm not discounting that these are very concerning comments, which is why we're continuing to investigate that. ... It's the safety of everyone here on this campus and the community that's our priority.”

CMU released a statement at 11:20 a.m. on Monday morning addressing the situation.

“Since Sunday afternoon, Central Michigan University Police, the Division of University Engagement and Student Affairs and University Marketing and Communications have been tracking concerning comments made by an individual on CMU social media accounts,” CMU wrote in a press release.

“Law enforcement has been conducting an investigation and has taken measures to increase campus safety while the investigation continues. At this time, there is no indication that an imminent threat exists.”

If people have additional information that is relevant to this case, Wassman said they’re encouraged to contact CMUPD at 989-774-3081.

If people are impacted otherwise, the Counseling Center offers mental health support. To schedule an appointment, call 989-774-3381. Students can also reach out to CARE advocates or submit a CARES referral.

Wassman also said that due to these comments emerging on social media, the police are seeing misinformation about this incident.

“It’s important that folks follow and trust official sources of information, such as the police department and university marketing and communication,” he said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is released.
