SGA elects new members to each chamber

Bhagya Shri was voted in as the Student Government Association (SGA) Senate Leader at the SGA meeting on Sept. 21, after beating Aiden Partenio and Evan Potter.
“I feel like the SGA was a piece that I was missing,” said Shri. “So, it’s just something that I want to keep pushing forward.”
The Senate Leader position was available to all members of the Senate who have previously been elected to become a Senator. Shri said she wanted to pursue this position to use her voice to spread awareness.
“I feel like I hold a level of, I guess, knowledge and information that I feel like is unjust if I don’t share it and push forward on some of the progress" she said.
The House also elected two members, including Denim Scott as speaker pro tempore, and Isaac Hales as house clerk. The meeting also included elections for the Elections Committee, but no members ran.
Treasurer Sophia Laurain said she’s excited to see what these new members bring to SGA as a whole.
“So, there’s a lot of legislation that is trying to be passed by the exec board as well as Aiden…There are a lot of beautiful changes that would make everybody’s life a lot easier,” said Laurain.

Vice President Fatima Malik addressed the student body about her and SGA President Zainab Naaz’s meeting with CMU President Neil MacKinnon.
Some key aspects of that meeting, they said, included discussion about an Emergency Fund for students struggling to pay their tuition, weekend dining hall hours and changes to Wellness and/or Thanksgiving break.
