CMU women's club hockey handles Aurora University in series sweep

The Central Michigan women's club hockey team began its American Collegiate Hockey Association season by hosting a pair of games against Aurora University at Martin Ice Arena. Both games were won, 5-2 and 4-1, respectively.
These teams play one series every season, and last year Central Michigan captured a two-game sweep on the road in Aurora, Illinois. All-time, CMU now holds a 6-1-1 record against the Spartans.
The sweep was overshadowed by an injury late in the second game. CMU forward Ella Dumas was injured on a hit that resulted in a boarding penalty, and she was unable to leave the ice under her own power as she was carried off on a stretcher.
It was just shy of eight minutes into the final period of the second game when Dumas went down. After about 20 minutes, play resumed, and Olivia Grunert for Aurora was given a five minute major penalty for boarding.
Leading up to the injury, the game had already featured several physical collisions. It began with a hard collision between Mallory Camryn and an Aurora player in the second period of the first game.
Camryn was racing to play the puck but ended up colliding knee-to-knee. She was lifted off the ice, spun and landed hard. She was in obvious pain after getting to the bench, but she eventually returned to the contest.
She picked up three points after the hit, recording two assists and a goal.
With a 4-0 lead, midway through the third period, Elliot Horstman was called for interference after sending an Aurora player into the boards away from the puck. Aurora scored its first goal of the game shortly after on the power play.
CMU remained under a bit of pressure until Kia Leu scored her second goal of the night, putting the game out of reach.
Both goaltenders for CMU kept pucks out of the net. Lainie Fliegel started as the goalie in game one with Sidney Pound taking over for game two. Only three goals were allowed between the two in a weekend which the Chippewas never trailed.
Game two began as a stalemate as Central Michigan’s offense failed to score in the first period, stonewalled by Karolina Lovetinska in net for the Spartans.
Eventually the offense figured it out. Holdsworth ripped a left-handed wrist shot past Lovetinska, who barely got a piece of it. Less than 30 seconds later, Taylor Storey went in all alone and beat the goaltender for a wide-open attempt with the forehand to take the lead 2-0.
Later in the period, Holdsworth took a hooking penalty, giving the Spartans a power play, and the team capitalized with a goal with 47 seconds left in the period. Brooklyn Ramaglia placed the puck high and in the net to make it a one-goal game.
Then, in the opening minute of the final period, Alyssa Borlace got an open shot and picked the corner to extend the lead. Camryn followed up a shot on goal and snuck one through the goaltender’s legs to make it a 3-0 lead for Central Michigan.
The score was stuck at 4-1 throughout the third period. Even after the major penalty, there was little to be done for Central Michigan’s team except to run out the clock.
CMU begins the season 2-0, with a series against Michigan State upcoming. The team will welcome MSU to Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Oct. 3, and travel to Munn Ice Arena on Sunday, Oct. 4.
