Central Michigan University police investigated reports of sexual assault, fraud, theft, domestic violence and property damage between Sept. 17 and Oct. 13, according to information provided by Jason Vanconant, a lieutenant at the CMU Police Department.

Several cases have been referred to the Isabella County prosecutor’s office for review, while other investigations have resulted in arrests.

Sept. 17:

An 18-year-old female student reported being sexually assaulted by her 19-year-old boyfriend in Beddow Hall. The investigation was completed and referred to the Isabella County prosecutor’s office for review.

Sept. 18:

An 18-year-old student reported being the victim of fraud after responding to an email advertising a job opening. The student electronically sent money to the individual behind the offer before realizing it was a scam. Police said the suspect was believed to be overseas.

Sept. 20:

A student in Kulhavi Hall reported that her 19-year-old roommate took money out of her debit card. Police interviewed the roommate, who told police she did the theft. The case was referred to the Isabella County prosecutor’s office.

Also on that day, a 21-year-old male student reported that several items were stolen out of his car while it was parked in Lot 3 on campus. Police said the car had been left unlocked. The case was linked to several other vehicle break-ins reported in Mount Pleasant. Investigators identified suspects, and they were taken into custody.

Oct. 3:

During the home football game at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, a 20-year-old female student was reported to have assaulted her 22-year-old girlfriend. Police completed interviews and arrested the suspect for domestic violence.

Oct. 5:

Police discovered that license plate recognition cameras on campus had been spray-painted and damaged. Vanconant said investigators believed the incident was connected to an earlier case in which a metal pole holding a license plate recognition camera was cut down approximately six weeks earlier.

After investigating, police said detectives developed a suspect and obtained a search warrant for an off-campus residence. A 24-year-old man, who was not a CMU student, was interviewed and told police he did the property damage. He was lodged on a charge of malicious destruction of property.

The case remains open and is being handled through the court system, Vanconant said.

Oct. 10:

A CMU officer conducted a traffic stop near Mission and Broomfield roads after observing a car driving at night without its headlights on. The 18-year-old male driver was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs. Vanconant also said that the individual was wanted on a warrant.

Oct. 13:

Police investigated an incident involving six women, ages 18 to 20, at Woldt Hall. The group included both students and nonstudents who were involved in a disagreement that escalated into a fight.

Vanconant said the case involves potential assault, larceny and malicious destruction of property charges. No arrests were made at the time of the interview. The case is under review by the prosecutor’s office.
