Michigan State University students gather around the Spartan Statue on Feb. 14 after a mass shooting took place Monday night on campus in East Lansing. Campus and community members took turns placing flowers on the statue as they grieved and honored those affected by the shooting.

Senior Antonea Harris hosts the Melenated Makeup event during the Black Hair Care workshop, Friday, Feb. 10, in the Bovee UC Rotunda. Instructors showed participants and students how to do makeup, and free makeup products were offered; Harris estimated 110 participants attended the workshop.
Junior Makayla Osborn and senior Christiano Bermudez host the second annual Black Hair Care event, Friday, Feb. 10, in the UC Rotunda. The event, intended to bring awareness to the lack of information and availability of Black hair care in Mount Pleasant, attracted approximately over 215 participants.
The Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center hosts the Midnight Skate to fundraise for Alternative Spring Breaks, Thursday, Feb. 9, at Martin Ice Arena. The event was held from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am and had 96 participants who joined for the late-night skating.
CMU Program Board and Multicultural Academic Student Services hosts Kyla Jenee Lacey to perform slam poetry as a part of Black History Month, Wednesday, Feb. 8 in Opperman Auditorium. Lacey is an acclaimed writer, performer, and visual artist whose spoken word poems discuss themes of race and gender, among a variety of other topics.
CMU Men's basketball falls to Ball State 65-51 on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas were outscored by the Cardinals in both halves and this loss brings their overall record to 8-16.
Born a month early, Heather Hanley did not know what her first son, Caleb Ross would be capable of - talking, walking or otherwise. Now 37 years later, he is an accomplished Special Olympics (SO) athlete and beloved by his community. Ross, who was given multiple diagnoses, has what his mom calls 'Caleb syndrome'. He began SO when he was about eight years old. Since then, he's been involved with over a dozen sports offered by SO: bocce ball, flag football, soccer, softball, basketball, horseshoe, skiing, snowshoeing, poly hockey, dodgeball, kickball, bowling and volleyball. Basketball is his favorite. Caleb's three brothers, John, Joe and David, support him along the way and at times, have coached his team. Hanley said David is Caleb's biggest supporter and always wants to attend his games. Caleb helps out at the Strickler Center's food drive twice per week, attends church on Sundays and works for Mid-Michigan Industries where he does trash pickup and passes out Central Michigan Life newspapers every two weeks. He is driven by community involvement. Everywhere he goes, someone knows Caleb.

Nicole Humble is a nurse at Woodland Hospice House in Mount Pleasant, Michigan working in end-of-life care. While her job is hard and emotionally taxing, she says that she keeps going because “Something about taking care of someone while they’re dying…not everyone gets to do that.” This story follows her throughout her day to show the passion and care that she puts into her job

The Omicron Beta chapter of Omega Psi Phi and Truu Colors Entertainment hold the Michigan Made College Tour Friday, Feb. 3, in Finch Fieldhouse. The tour, which is headlined by Detroit rappers YN Jay and Sada Baby will make stops to colleges around the state.
Central Michigan University's Department of Theatre and Dance performs and rehearses classical Greek comedy "Lysistrata", directed and adapted by Joshua Brewer Feb. 2-5 in Townsend Kiva Auditorium. The comedy, which follows a group of women who withhold sex from their husbands in order to achieve peace in times of war, was originally written in 411 BC by Aristophanes, but has been adapted to take place in the Woodstock Era.
