Navigating the Workforce for Success

Keynote speaker and finance attorney J.R. Clark visited Central Michigan University to talk about the history of African Americans in the United States for the start of Black History Month in Biosciences room 1010, Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. Clark touched on many things including slavery, Jim Crow laws and slavery abolishment. Clark also told many stories about African American role models throughout history and how students can change the world just like they did.  

Men's Basketball vs. Bowling Green

Central Michigan defeated Bowling Green 90-71 at McGuirk Arena, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025. Central Michigan junior forward Ugnius Jarusevicius returned from injury and contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds. Coming off the bench, Central Michigan junior guard Kyler Vanderjagt recorded a career-high 25 points and six three-pointers made. Central Michigan committed only seven turnovers on the night, an improvement after committing 19 turnovers in their last game against Buffalo. Members of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe performed a drum ceremony during halftime. 

Women's Basketball vs Bowling Green

The Central Michigan women's basketball team falls to Bowling Green 76-69 after a hard fought game in McGuirk Arena, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025. Central Michigan was joined by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe during half time to perform a drum ceremony for the audience. 

Spring MainStage

As the spring semester kicks off, attendees gather in the Student Activity Center for Spring MainStage on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025. With tables lined throughout the venue, students explored opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community, making new connections along the way.  

Jewish Heritage Week Soup and Substance

For Jewish Heritage Week, Hillel at Central Michigan put on a Soup and Substance event with keynote speaker Irene Miller at the University Center Rotunda, Monday, Jan. 27, 2025. During the event, attendees could eat matzah ball soup and listen to Miller discuss her journey as a Holocaust survivor. Afterward, people had the opportunity to ask Miller questions and buy a copy of her memoir "Into No Man’s Land."  

Men's Basketball vs. Western Michigan

Central Michigan defeated rivals Western Michigan 73-52 at McGuirk Arena, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. It was CMU's Toilet Paper Toss/White Out game, as fans wore all white and participated in the pre-game toss. Central Michigan held Western to a 32.20% shooting percentage and only 20.83% from three. Central Michigan senior guard/forward Jakobi Heady led the game with 16 points. Central Michigan's next game is at Buffalo, Tuesday, Jan. 28.  

Toilet Paper Toss

Central Michigan defeated rivals Western Michigan 73-52 at McGuirk Arena, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. It was CMU's Toilet Paper Toss/White Out game, as fans wore all white and participated in the pre-game toss. There were 5,361 fans in attendance, less than 100 away from setting a new attendance record for McGuirk Arena. 

MLK Charity Basketball Game

As Martin Luther King Jr. Week ends, the Charity Basketball Game had an exciting matchup between students and staff, at the MLK Charity Basketball Game in the Student Activities Center Friday, Jan. 24, 2025. The event drew a lively crowd to support a meaningful cause; all contributions went to the CMU Student Food Pantry. The event honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by combining community engagement and spirited competition.

MLK Keynote Speaker Diana Patton

Keynote speaker Diana Patton visited Central Michigan University to talk about Martin Luther King Jr., mindfulness, hope and coming together to bring change to the world at the Central Michigan University French Auditorium, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. Patton spoke to the audience to hear their views and often thanked them for their comments and time. 

Women's Basketball vs. Kent State

Kent State defeated Central Michigan 77-56 at McGuirk Arena, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. Kent State was led by senior guard Jenna Batsch who scored a game-high 16 points. Central Michigan's leading scorer was senior guard Jess Lawson with 14 points. Central Michigan was outscored in every quarter except the last, scoring 19 points in the fourth. The 14th edition of the Hoops for Hunger game saw 1,510 in attendance as local schools visited McGuirk Arena. Children in attendance received Hoops for Hunger stickers and were encouraged to get loud during the game. Central Michigan's next game will be at home against rivals Western Michigan for their 43rd all-time meeting.  

Men's Basketball vs Ball State

The Central Michigan University men's basketball team suffered a tight 82-80 loss against Ball State in McGuirk Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. CMU Sophomore forward Quentin Heady put up the most points, 17, for the team. Despite the frigid weather, students showed up in support of the team. 

MLK CommUNITY Peace March and Vigil

Central Michigan’s Multicultural Academic Student Services held its annual Martin Luther King Jr. CommUNITY Peace March and Vigil at the Student Activity Center, Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. This year's march and vigil were held indoors because of the extreme cold. Attendees marched through the Student Acivity Center holding up signs and reciting chants. After a keynote speech by Central Michigan senior Imani Ellsworth, people could enjoy hot chocolate, donuts and apple cider.  

Wrestling vs Cleveland State

Central Michigan faced off against Cleveland State at McGuirk Arena, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025. CMU came in with two straight wins against Northern Illinois and Drexel, while Cleveland State looked for their first win of the season. Through four matches it was close, CMU 9 and CSU 7. However, in the final six matches, CMU would outscore Cleveland State 20-3. Securing their fourth win of the season, putting their record at 4-5 overall, and 2-0 in MAC play. Five CMU wrestlers would win by either a tech fall or a major decision, including No. 26 redshirt junior Mason Shrader and No. 32 redshirt junior Tyler Swiderski. They now travel to Washington D.C for the Chippewa Challenge against Campbell University on Sunday, Jan. 26. 

Opening of Chef Sergey's Bakery

The grand opening of Chef Sergey's Bakery drew a crowd, eager to try authentic European pastries in Midland, Michigan, Saturday, January 18, 2024. The owners Sergey and Christina Pokanevych paired up with Natalia Lakovleva and Maga Miakiiev to give the Midland community a taste of their home. Customers now get to enjoy freshly baked goods, including sourdough, croissants, French baguettes and pastries inspired by the bakery's rich heritage. 

Women's Basketball vs. Eastern Michigan

Central Michigan women's basketball faced off against Eastern Michigan in McGuirk Arena on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025. Central Michigan won 73-64, with four players scoring in double digits.  

Gymnastics vs Bowling Green

Central Michigan hosted a Rumble and Tumble event, a gymnastics meet, and a wrestling meet which went on simultaneously in the McGuirk Arena, Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. The gymnastics team competed against Bowling Green and the wrestling team competed against Northern Illinois, it was a MAC opener for both teams and they both walked out with a win. The Innocents

The Central Michigan University School of Music hosts guest percussionists John Lane and Allen Otte to perform "The Innocents" in Chamichian Chamber Music Hall, Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. "The Innocents" explores issues of wrongful imprisonment, exoneration and resilience in the American criminal justice system through the use of performance art and non-traditional instruments. The project was inspired by a photography exhibition by Taryn Simon, and aims to confront the often uncomfortable questions surrounding injustice. 

Jack Skoog Open

Multiple collegiate indoor track and field teams met at the Jack Skoog Indoor track for the Jack Skoog Open, Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. In the 15 events CMU participated in, they took first place in eight, including sophomore Chesney Wilke, who placed first in the mile run and 600m. Sophomore vaulter Emily Yoshino also got first place with a personal best of 3.85 meters cleared in the pole vault. CMU will travel to Eastern Michigan for the Bob Parks Memorial meet on Saturday, Jan. 25.  

A presidential farewell

Former President Jimmy Carter, the nation's 39th chief executive, returns to Washington, D.C., for the last time on Jan. 7, 2025.

During a special ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial, Carter's casket was transferred from hearse to caisson. The event featured a formation of Midshipmen, the U.S. Navy Band, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Yvette M. Davids, who spoke about Carter's arrival at Annapolis in 1943 and paid homage to the former president's Naval career. 

Immediately following the casket transfer, a funeral procession unfolded along Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues, retracing the route that Carter walked after taking his inaugural oath in 1977. Representatives from The Old Guard stood at attention, while a horse-drawn caisson progressed at a measured pace. (Special to CM Life | Aurora Rae)

Men's Basketball vs. Eastern Michigan

The Central Michigan University men's basketball team beat Eastern Michigan 82-63 on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in McGuirk Arena. Junior forward Ugnius Jarusevicius led the team with 23 points and senior guard Anthony Pritchard scored 22 points. Senior guard/forward Jakobi Heady wore the number 32 to honor his late sister, who played basketball for Eastern. The team will head to Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 18 to face Northern Illinois University.
