Sports Update: Hoyas defeat women's basketball
The women’s basketball team remains winless after losing its fourth straight game Wednesday, 94-69, to Georgetown.
The game was played in front of 5,195 fans, a Rose Arena record crowd, mostly elementary and junior high school students for the annual Recess in Rose program.
Both teams got out to a fast start, combining for 31 points in the first five minutes of the game.
“We came out a much better team today,” said coach Sue Guevara. “There was improvement.”
CMU (0-4) remained close, trailing 33-32 with 9:32 remaining the first half, until junior forward Kaihla Szunko picked up her second personal foul and had to go out of the game.
Mirroring the Chippewas’ loss to Loyola-Chicago on Saturday, Georgetown (4-2) made the most of it – going on a 10-0 run and taking a 49-38 lead into halftime.
“We have inexperienced back-ups; sometimes it looks good, sometimes it doesn’t,” Guevara said.
The Hoyas continued to exploit CMU’s lack of depth, extending their halftime lead to 72-55 with 11:07 left in the second half. CMU, however, did try and make a late-game run, closing Georgetown’s lead to eight points with about seven minutes remaining but could not get any closer.
“I think we had some trouble finding our rhythm,” Szunko said. “We need to be more disciplined and everyone needs to understand their role on the floor.”
Freshman guard Jalisa Olive led the team with 17 points off the bench while senior forward Britni Houghton scored 14 points and had five rebounds. Szunko had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Georgetown freshman guard Sugar Rodgers led all scorers with 29 points. Sophomore forward Latia Magee had 18 points and nine rebounds.
“Sometimes you lose the fight but you have to fight back,” Guevara said. “I want us to still remain confident.”
CMU play Indiana State at 2 p.m. Sunday in Terre Haute, Ind.
