The CMU softball team split its doubleheader against Oakland today, dropping the first game 4-2 and winning the finale 6-3.

After giving up a run in first inning of Game 2, CMU settled down behind freshman pitcher Kara Dornbos, who gave up two earned runs on five hits and walked three. Dornbos threw her sixth complete game of the season and improved her record to 7-1.

CMU put up most of its offense in the third inning, scoring five runs. Sophomore shortstop Molly Coldren had two runs batted in on two hits in the game. Sophomore second baseman Brittini Merchant added a two-RBI hit to put the game away.

“I just kept telling myself to relax,” Coldren said. “I know I’ve done this a million times. If I am just myself, I’ll come up with the big hit.”

Despite striking out nine batters in Game 1, junior pitcher Kari Seddon had control issues in the first inning, giving up three walks and hitting a batter. A run scored on catcher interference, the first of three runs scored in the inning.

“I was very tight when I came out, Seddon said. “I think I put too much pressure on myself coming into the game.”

CMU put some offense together, but left 10 runners on base in the game.

Coach Margo Jonker said her team was nervous about playing at home for the first time this season.

“We didn’t do the little things right (in the first game),” she said. “We tried to make the big play when we should have just made the routine play.”

CMU travels Friday to Bowling Green for a doubleheader to open the Mid-American Conference schedule.
