Field Hockey suffers season-ending loss in MAC Tournament

It took two overtimes, and a shootout to knock Central Michigan University out of the field hockey Mid-American Conference Tournament on Friday.

CMU lost to Ohio University for the second time this season, 2-1.

It was the first shootout of the 2014 season for CMU. Goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds allowed two strokes on four shots. The CMU offense was shutout on three shots in the shootout.

Head Coach Cristy Freese said the team can only practice with each other.

“Sadie hasn’t had to go through this with other players, its different facing new shooters,” said Freese.

The Chippewas were the No. 1 team to start the tournament with a 5-1 record in the MAC.

OU was the stronger team in the first half, as the CMU defense held off the attack.

The Bobcats put up 12 shots, and were rewarded six penalty corners in the first half against CMU. One goal was given up by Reynolds and the CMU defense.

After halftime OU was able to manage only three shots, and no penalty corners.

“It was a chess match out there,” Freese said.

Freshman Haley Bova got the women on the board with her fourth goal of the season. The game was tied 1-1 with seven minutes left in the half.

The women of the field hockey team end their season with a share of the regular season MAC title, and a 5-1 conference record.

“Sadie will be a senior next year, and a three year starter," Freese said. "We’re used to going to the tournament, our team will be determined to make it to the finals."
