Program Board tackles Throwback Thursday with '90s-themed Pinterest Party

Rochester Hills freshman Alex Schmitt and Gibraltar freshman Melissa Moninger make bracelets during the 90s themed Pinterest party on April 23rd in the UC Terrace Room.

Students wearing denim jackets and flannel shirts filled the Bovee University Center Thursday as acoustic one-hit-wonders blared loudly in the background.

What could be easily confused as a lost early episode of "Friends" was the latest installment of Program Board's Pinterest Party. Held multiple times a semester, Program Board Special Events Chair Catherine Patterson said she wanted to make this one noteworthy.

"We wanted to make it bigger this semester with a special theme," said Patterson, a Mattawan junior. "A few people picked up that we'd offer prizes for best the '90s look and a few people came dressed up in cool outfits."

A Pinterest party, Patterson said, is a gathering of friends for DIY craft projects found on the popular website. Patterson added that the '90s theme was to throwback to student's fascination with nostalgia from their childhood.

"On Buzzfeed, there are quizzes that will tell you what '90s song you're most like, or what '90s character you are," she said. "It's really popular and we wanted to make crafts that we made in elementary school."

Students attending the event made homemade scrunchies, Hacky Sacks, friendship bracelets and iron-on fusion bead creations. The Pinterest events are the least expensive productions put on by Program Board, costing the group just a little more than $200 this semester. Any leftover materials will be used for the Maroonzie Music and Arts Festival at the beginning of Finals Week.

Program Board kept up the '90s flair by suggesting that patrons wear clothing from the decade to make the event more authentic.

With her hair scrunchied into a high ponytail, Ypsilanti freshman Emily Boss said she uses DIY projects to destress. She also loves the surfing the deep corners of Pinterest for new ideas.

Wearing a heavy flannel shirt and a winter hat, Katelyn Goff, 18, of Flushing, sported getup worthy of a Pearl Jam concert. Goff said she found the look while checking out a makeup tutorial focused on capturing the grunge aesthetic.

"I like it because it kind of shows off the 'I don't care' kind of look," she said. "I'm a broke college student and having something like this is fun because I can't pay for all of these crafts on my own. Each time they throw one of these events, (Program Board) does a great job."

To help suggest the next theme or other types of events, message Program Board on Twitter or email the group on the Program Board OrgSync page.
