Two days after an emotional first victory for the field hockey team and first-year Head Coach Molly Pelowski, the Chippewas faced 14th-ranked Big Ten giant, Michigan.

But, similar to the match against nationally-ranked Iowa last Sunday, CMU would open strong and eventually let it get out of hand in the in the latter portion of the match, falling 4-0 in its final home game of the regular season.

Michigan came into the match on Sunday 12-3 and 5-1 in the Big Ten.

Michigan began their offensive dominance early in the first period when forward Carly Bennett scored an unassisted goal at the top of the box at the 8:13 mark.

The Chippewa defense would stand strong after that score for almost 19 minutes before allowing another Michigan goal. In the 26th and 30th minutes, struck again to take a 3-0 lead into the half.

“They’re fast, they play fast and they were able to really bog down our attack through the middle of the field,” Pelowski said.

Michigan would score again in the 54th minute by Katie Trombetta, icing the game for the Wolverines. CMU was outshot 9-2 and fall to 1-13 overall.

For the Chippewas, the next match may be the decider on whether or not the team makes the four-team MAC tournament, which will be in Mount Pleasant. CMU plays Miami (9-7, 3-1 MAC) this Saturday following a six-game homestand.

“We’re focused on playing our game,” Pelowski said. “We have to clean up our individual defense, our two touch hockey, and just playing stronger in the midfield.”

The game will be next Saturday in Oxford, Ohio at noon.
