Rapid Reaction: Michigan 14, Central Michigan 1


ANN ARBOR — Central Michigan’s lacrosse team lost 14-1 to Michigan Sunday in its first game in program history.

What happened

Michigan's Natalie Carti scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the game. Due to an illegal stick being used on Michigan’s side, a goal was was negated with 17 minutes left. Michigan still led the game 2-0.

CMU trailed Michigan 6-0 at halftime. Jess Angerman and Kim Coughlan led their team, scoring two goals each in the first half.

Allie Breitfeller scored within the first minute of the second half, giving Michigan a 7-0 lead. Kim Coughlan and Tess Korten added a goal each, making it 9-0.

CMU freshman attacker Kaitlin Kimball scored with 24 minutes to go to earn CMU's first goal in program history. 

Michigan's Tess Korten scored again at 21 minutes, and Natalie Carti scored three times in the second half.

What it means

CMU has something to work from now, with 15 games to play in the regular season. CMU was picked to finish eighth in the nine-team Atlantic Sun Conference.

The first Atlantic Sun Conference matchup is March 30 against Detroit. The Titans were picked to finish third in the conference. CMU will play against seven other teams before the conference opener.

What’s next

The Chippewas will take on Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, North Carolina on Feb. 20. On March 6, they face Cincinnati. CMU’s first home game is during Spring Break on at 3 p.m. on March 11 against Delaware State.
