Rentschler homers twice to lift Chippewas over Rockets in walk-off fashion

The Chippewas defeated the Toledo Rockets in walk-off fashion Friday on a pair of home runs from senior first baseman Katelyn Rentschler.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Rentschler led off the inning with a home run to give the Chippewas the lead and secure their third MAC victory of the year.

It was her second home run of the game and eighth of the season, the highest on the team. Friday's walk-off victory was the first of the year for CMU and second walk-off hit in Rentschler's career.

Junior pitcher Rachael Knapp kept the Rockets offense in check by allowing one run over seven innings pitched with seven strikeouts and four hits. Knapp's record improved to 8-11 on the year.

Only three Toledo batters were able to get a hit off Knapp, who earned her first victory since March 22.

With today's win, CMU's record improves to 16-21-1 (3-8-1 MAC) and Toledo falls to 8-29 (2-9 MAC). The two teams will square off in a doubleheader Saturday at Margo Jonker Stadium, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

CMU is now tied with Toledo for fourth place in the MAC West Division with an opportunity to improve its standings further Saturday.
