The Chippewas return from Kalamazoo with yet another loss.
Central Michigan volleyball was swept by Western Michigan University at University Arena on Tuesday. The team is now 0-16 overall and 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Broncos picked up their first conference win in this matchup after coming off two losses to Ball State over the weekend. They are now 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.
Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Cripe led the Chippewas’ offense and defense with 13 kills and 11 digs.
This marks Cripe’s ninth career double-double.
Sophomore libero Rainey Weidman followed with 10 digs, and sophomore setter Brytn Lyon had 17 assists in the match.
The Broncos set the mood early on Tuesday, opening the first set with a 5-0 run.
Then, they closed the set out with an 8-0 run. Despite head coach Arielle Wilson’s attempt to break this with a timeout, Western Michigan took the set 25-15.
CMU charted a .000 hitting percentage in the first set and had only eight kills compared to the Broncos’ 15.
Hitting continued to be a struggle for the Chippewas for the remainder of the night as they hit .176% in the second set and .154% in the third set.
Western Michigan, however, did not have this problem, recording a .444 hitting percentage and 15 kills in the second set.
Western Michigan’s junior outside hitter Annalise Patchett picked up 16 kills. Junior outside hitter Izzy Swiercz, a former Chippewa, contributed 9 kills for the Broncos.
CMU lost both the second and third sets 25-18.
Errors were an issue for the Chippewas in this matchup, and one final CMU error sealed the win for the Broncos. Central Michigan had 21 errors compared to Western Michigan’s 14.
The Chippewas will meet with a familiar opponent, Eastern Michigan, on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Ypsilanti.
