The Central Michigan baseball team lost another key player Thursday as junior pitcher Nick Deeg signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants.

Deeg led CMU in strikeouts with 86 in 2016. He ends his career as a Chippewa with a 17-16 record and a 3.71 ERA. He had one year of eligibility remaining.

Earlier this summer, freshman pitcher Grant Wolfram transferred to Davenport University and sophomore shortstop Zach McKinstry signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Senior pitcher Sean Renzi also signed a deal with the Chicago White Sox. He graduated in May.

"You always look forward," Head Coach Steve Jaksa told CMUChippewas.com. "It's something you recognize in the game that these things happen. That's part of what guys are trying to achieve. It's just a matter of when are they ready to go out."

The Chippewas will have to find which pitchers can step into the places of Deeg, Renzi and Wolfram.

Right-handed pitcher Sean Martens returns for his junior season after Tommy John Surgery and lefty Braxton Markle, a junior, also returns from an injury.

Deeg was 4-7 last season with a 3.95 ERA. He pitched the only two complete game shutouts for the Chippewas — one against Ball State in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
