Central Michigan University Board of Trustees holds a committee meeting in the Lake Michigan Room at the Bovee University Center on Sept. 21.

Because of a decline in enrollment, Barrie Wilkes, vice president of finance and administrative services, said Central Michigan University's amended 2016-17 operating budget is looking at a $9.8 million reduction.

The Finance and Facilities Committee met Wednesday in the presidential conference room of the Bovee University Center to discuss the amended 2016-17 operating budget and updates on CMU’s collaboration with the city on Wednesday.

The Board of Trustees will discuss these topics and vote on 14 action items Thursday, Sept. 22 at 8:30 a.m. at the formal meeting in the presidential conference room.

The action items discussed in Wednesdays meeting include:

  • Contributions quarterly report
  • Endowments/awards/scholarships
  • Naming opportunities
  • Lease of campus space to Ten16 Recovery Network

Operating Budget

In a previous meeting with the Academic and Student Affairs Committee, Vice President Steven Johnson said enrollment is down 2.5 percent from last year.

“Enrollment is a significant part of our budget,” Wilkes said. “Our enrollment has come in below where we projected. In my opinion, we need to be more conservative of the estimates.”

City / CMU Collaboration Updates

Facilities management leadership has been meeting regularly with the city staff members to identify locations where city water and sanitary lines intersect with campus infrastructure.

Vice President and General Counsel Manuel Rupe said the meetings help facilities management to identify those locations, find out who is responsible for them and make sure problems such as water line breaks are reported so they can be fixed promptly.

“Knowing who owns the responsibility of the maintenance of those items has been pretty critical,” Rupe said. “Steve Lawrence and the folks at facilities management have been exceptional in working with the city to identify where those are.”

Contributions Quarterly Report

For the quarter ending on June 30, 2016, there were 4,445 donors and $4.1 were received. $17.6 million were received for the year and there was a total of 25,822 donors.

Naming Opportunities

There are two naming opportunities in the College of Medicine that include the Saginaw Medical Learning Center and the Simulation Center for Covenant Healthcare.

Lease of Campus Space to Ten16 Recovery Network

The Ten16 Recovery Network’s purpose is to intervention opportunities to students on campus and raise awareness of alcohol and drug abuse, said Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services Steven Johnson.

Adding a Ten16 center to CMU’s campus would be a no-cost opportunity if approved.

“One of the opportunities that presented itself for us is that they’re willing to actually engage and be on campus,” Johnson said. “In order to do that, we would have to identify space and identify an appropriate location that would integrate them with other related services on campus.”
