Rosie Bauman was nearing the end of her four day road trip to Yellowstone National Park on May 14 when she lost control of her vehicle on a stretch of "rolling and winding road" near Columbus, Montana.

The Remus junior and photographer for Central Michigan Life, 20, was airlifted to Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana, where she received brain surgery and had a portion of her skull removed to relieve the pressure in her brain. Among the injuries Bauman received in the crash, she was diagnosed with a brain bleed, according to her father, Bruce Bauman.

Bauman will undergo another surgery to replace the piece of her skull on May 18. Her father said she also has several bruises and severe swelling around her right eye, which was injured in the crash.

"She's was more alive and articulate than she was the first day I got to the hospital- 100 times better," her father said. "She's even been laughing and joking around."

Police said the Jeep she was driving, which her parents had given to her to travel to her summer job at Yellowstone, was completely totaled. Bauman had exited the interstate highway in Columbus and was driving on a mountain road when she lost control of the vehicle and went off the road. It sped down the hill quickly, even leaving the ground at some points.

"We aren't sure what happened exactly," Bruce Bauman said. "I think she must have just taken her eyes off the road for a second to look at the map, and she went off the road."

Police told her father that Bauman's seatbelt is the only reason she survived the crash.

Depending on the progress she makes after her second surgery, doctors said she could be discharged next week.

A GoFundMe page has been created for Rosie and her family to help with any medical expenses and transportation costs. On the morning of May 18, Rosie posted on Facebook:

"My family has already been able to use this these funds to ship my stuff back to Michigan and pay for our flights back. There aren’t enough words to thank you all enough for all your kindness during this rough (to say the least) time. I’m heading into my second surgery soon. Hoping for the best. Grateful for my support group!!!"
