After serving as chair of the Department of Art and Design since 2016, Jonathon Russell began his new role as the associate dean of the College of Arts and Media on Jan. 6.

A Jan. 12 press release by University Communications detailed Russell's hiring by Dean Janet Hethorn and a search committee that was announced in June 2019. The committee was chaired by Pete Vermeire, the associate dean of the College of Science and Engineering.

Russell obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual communication from Southern Illinois University in 2003. Two years later, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

He received his first associate professor position at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi that same year. In 2008, Russell found himself at Central Michigan as an associate professor of graphic design.

Russell was chosen amongst three finalists to replace Andrew Spencer, the former associate dean of the College of Arts and Media.
