Molly Davis drilled a deep 3-pointer and nodded her head in excitement. Her teammates celebrated the shot, which came as a sigh of relief after what had been an abysmal first quarter. The buzzer beater seemed to be the shot of life Central Michigan needed and just the spark it would need to erase what was currently a 12-point deficit.

Forty seconds into the fourth quarter of Central Michigan's matchup with Buffalo, Bull forward Loren Christie walked to the bench after picking up her fifth foul. The Bulls, who have a reputation for bullying opponents with their plethora of forwards, would have to go the rest of the way without one of their starters.

When Central Michigan's men's basketball team took the court Jan. 5, it wanted to replicate a season-best effort it put out against rival Eastern Michigan. In similar fashion, CMU's opponent, Bowling Green, was looking to copy what it had done against its first three Mid-American Conference opponents and stay unbeaten.

Like two heavyweight fighters, Central Michigan and Ohio took center stage on the second day of the new year and proved why they belong at the top of the Mid-American Conference. There were punches and counterpunches, with both teams putting together double digit scoring runs while holding their opponents scoreless for long stretches.
