Rants & Raves

Rants and Raves out of an idiot's mouth on this Wednesday morning:

The Pistons' Jerome Williams has decided that he is worth over $2 million a year. This from a player who can not consistently hit a 10 foot jump shot and needs to pump fake on a break away.

Williams says he is worth that kind of money not only because of his basketball skills, but because of his heart.

"What I bring is more than just basketball because of my heart," Williams said. "There are a lot of cities out there looking for more than a basketball player."

Excuse me Mr. Williams; but last time I checked a couple of hours of charity work does not win any basketball games. The salary cap today does not allow the mismanagement of salaries based on good intentions. If that was the case, then the Pistons should sign former president Jimmy Carter.

Do not get me wrong I believe that athletes giving back to the community is important. In fact, I am impressed with how Williams sets up a new foundation every week. However, I also think that the individual should do those things because they want to, not so they will be reimbursed.

Some fools are still talking up how tough the Big Ten Conference is (see Dobrowolski's column last Monday). Let me once again prove my point that the Big Ten is over hyped.

The conference has only two quality wins: Purdue over St. John's and Indiana over Utah. It also has losses to teams like Toledo and Vanderbilt (who beat Ohio State) and Creighton who beat Iowa.

In addition, MSU got killed whenever it played a quality out of conference opponent. Sure Sparty can tell you it has improved since then, but my question is what team has not improved in the last two months?

Just to show that I am a man of the 90's, I will admit that I cried during the movie Hope Floats. Just kidding! Like I would watch a chick flick like that.

Quote of the Week:

"I'm so disgusted by NBC and the L.A. press. You guys make me sick. I'm sick of NBC showing the Lakers every week and saying how good they are. They're a glamour team."

-Charles Barkley

I could not agree more with Barkley, which may be a first. Why do we have to see the same teams every week on NBC?

The Lakers are too much style and not enough substance. Just look at any game in which they played the Jazz and that fact will be abundantly clear.

It is not the fault of Del Harris or the talk about trades. The problem is the team has too many superstars and not enough balls. Every team needs a few role players.

Speaking of NBC, I believe that it is time to put Bill Walton to sleep in terms of basketball announcers.

Why must this moron continue to talk about himself even though his career ended years ago?

Look for Bobby Higginson to have a big year with the Tigers. Higginson is a talented, intense clubhouse leader who Detroit can build around. I believe he will bring a World Series championship to Detroit before his playing career is finished.
