Group seeks volunteers to lead way

Community building through community service is the goal of The United Way of Isabella County’s Volunteer Center’s Be My Neighbor Day April 21.
Volunteers from the CMU community are needed for the eight Be my Neighbor Day projects.
Students and community members working together creates a bond, said White Hall junior Rachelle Ferris, Volunteer and Service Learning Center staff member.
“It helps create good relations with Mount Pleasant and college students,” she said.
Part of National Volunteer Week, the day is focused on parks and the environment, Ferris said.
The eight projects include:

  • Playscape — beginning at 9 a.m. volunteers will sand and varnish the playscape at Island Park. Ideal for kindergarten through 12th-grade students.
  • Riverside Cemetery Cleanup — from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. volunteers will beautify the cemetery grounds.
  • Commission on Aging — from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. volunteers will rake leaves, trim shrubs and/or clean windows.
  • Chippewa River Cleanup — from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. volunteers will pick up debris, tree limbs in or around Chippewa River. Volunteers may get wet.
  • Food/decorations — from 8 to 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. volunteers are needed to set up and tear down registration and lunch tables under the Island Park pavilion.
  • Donations for organizations — from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. volunteers are needed to help agencies get special items for upcoming programs.
  • Friends of the Arts — from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. volunteers are needed to help with Broadway Theater and Art Reach spring cleaning.
  • Playground Swing Floor Resurfacing — from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. volunteers will help make Island, Potters and Sunnyside parks safer.
  • More than 20 volunteers are needed to provide leadership to the eight project teams. Orientation for team leaders is April 20 under the Island Park Pavilion.

In addition to the eight projects, people can participate in the Mid-Michigan Industries Fourth Annual Community Walk and Community Forum Fun.
The CMU community can do a one- or two-mile walk through downtown for $5 in advance or $7 the day of the walk. Participants will receive a T-shirt, food and be eligible for prize drawings.
All volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. in Island Park for registration and orientation.
A “Thank You” lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. for all volunteers.
