‘Covellapalooza’ brings classic Detroit sound

Pre-exam week means a party-free weekend for most students.

But Pi Kappa Phi gave students something to do other than study.

The social fraternity hosted a fund-raiser party on Friday.

“Covellapalooza,” named after fraternity member Nick Covell, raised nearly $400, some of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross.

Members of the fraternity said they held the fund-raiser in honor of Covell, a Royal Oak senior who gives generously to others.

Jackson sophomore Cullen Hale, vice-president of Pi Kappa Phi, said his fraternity isn’t well known around campus.

“This event was intended to raise both funds and awareness,” he said.

About 200 people attended.

The band All Streets Between, from Metro Detroit, was the main attraction at the event.

Dave Barberi, Mount Pleasant sophomore and Pi Kappa Phi president, said they selected All Streets Between based on word of mouth and online demos.

“We read reviews from the Detroit Free Press that said their sound was like Dave Matthews Band and the brothers went with it,” he said.

The band’s manager, Samantha Abreu, described their sound as a mix of jam, classical and rock.

Vocalist Jackson Gibson and guitarist Bryce Carroll-Cou are the original members of the band and have known each other for eight years.

They have opened for headline bands such as Lifehouse, Black Rose and The Jerry Garcia Band.

The members said they bring different musical influences to the table and it produces a unique sound and attracts a diverse audience.

“It’s incredible how they can play for a college group and then go to a biker bar,” Abreu said.

The band said they want to create music that makes listeners want to dance, but still has meaningful lyrics.
