Sports Update: Volleyball advances to MAC semifinals

The volleyball team was able to repeat its sweep against Northern Illinois to advance to the semifinals in the Mid-American Conference tournament for the first time since 1996 Friday in Toledo.

“It was a big time match big time performance,” said coach Erik Olson. “We already knew each other so well and we played each other so recently that we knew exactly what they wanted to do and vice versa. But we were able to take advantage of it more.”

Sophomore outside hitter rose to the occasion again for Central as she led the floor with 18 kills. The offense was able to handle the Huskies well as they took each set by at least four points.

The second set of the match looked like it could go either way as the two teams were tied at 18 late in the set. Junior defensive specialist Lisa Johnson then served up seven consecutive points which brought the team to a set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

With the victory, CMU advances to take on the winner of No. 1 Ohio and No. 8 Ball State at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Seagate Center in Toledo.

“It feels pretty awesome,” Olson said. “It was a huge hurdle for us to get over and now we are just taking it one match at a time"
