CMU baseball wins series opener against Ohio

A four-run eighth inning led the Central Michigan baseball team to its first Mid-American Conference win Friday, beating Ohio 9-3 at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio.

Locked in a 2-2 tie after seven, junior Tyler Hall started the rally with single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt by Brendan Emmett, Hall advanced to third on a single from William Arnold. Hall scored following a walk and wild pitch, giving the Chippewas a 3-2 lead, but it was senior Tom Howard's pinch-hit three-run home run that blew the game open.

CMU (11-16, 1-3 MAC) tacked on three more in the ninth, two of which came unearned.

Senior right fielder Matt Faiman went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs. Six other players had one hit a piece.

Junior left-hander Trent Howard (2-3) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Seith Streich allowed four runs - three earned - on five hits in 7 1/3 innings in the loss for Ohio (13-12, 1-3 MAC).

The series continues at 3 p.m. today.
