Career games from Da’Jourie Turner and Kerby Tamm helped the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team snap a four game losing streak and beat Western Michigan University 63-51 Saturday at McGuirk Arena.

“I hope this game is a springboard,” Head Coach Sue Guevara said. “After the game I told our players to remember this feeling. I will stress that again in practice. We are going to have to work if we want to feel that way again.”

Turner finished with a career-high 23 points in 34 minutes of play. She broke her previous career record of 21 points, which she set earlier this season against Bowling Green State University.

“I have to give some props to my assistant coach Kristin Haynie,” Guevara said. “She has been working with our guards day in and day out on attacking the rim and using the screen.”

Tamm recorded her second career double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

“The rebounds were bouncing my way a little today,” Tamm said. “I also made sure to get early rebounding positioning because Western is a physical team.”

The two team leaders where not the only Chippewas to make an impact on Saturday’s game.

CMU had six different players score including senior Jas’Mine Bracey who recorded 9 points and 8 rebounds to round out a total team performance. According to Guevara, Bracey was a pivotal part of her squad’s second-half gameplan.

“We went to Jas’Mine right away in the second half,” Guevara said. “We were able to get the ball to her and she finished.”

While the team was happy to get back to their winning ways, there is still plenty of time to improve before the postseason.

“We have to be playing our best basketball by March, but we can’t get caught up in the highs of winning and the lows of losing,” Guevara said.
