Wrestling heads to MAC Championship

The Mid-American Conference Championship for wrestling begins March 7. Central Michigan University is ranked third in the MAC this season with an overall record of 9-6, and a 6-2 conference record.

NCAA wrestling tournaments are scored by adding the individual scores of matches to an overall team score. The team with the highest overall score wins the tournament championship.

There are three ways to score team points:

Advancement points are awarded to each wrestler who wins a match. One point is given in the championship bracket, a half point in the consolation bracket.

Placement points are awarded to wrestlers based on where they finish in the tournament.

Finally, there are bonus points. These are added for each near fall or major decision within the match.

The Chippewas have 16 MAC Titles. Head Coach Tom Borrellii won 11 titles in a row from 2002-2012

“We just need to go, perform and wrestle up to our capabilities,” said Borrelli. “The pressure is not on us, that’s for sure.”

Being lower in the seeding does not mean lowering expectations for Borrelli and his team.

In practice this week, Borrelli asked what the Chippewas' goals were to end the season. Wrestlers took their turns explaining what they think needs to happen to have a successful tournament.

“This is the time of the year to focus on what you do well,” Borrelli said.

Brackets for the tournament will be released March 3.
