Bloomfield Hills senior Angie White goes for a spike against Toledo in McGuirk Arena on Oct. 10. The Chippewas beat toledo 3-0.

In the second game without its head coach, Central Michigan’s volleyball team turned in another solid performance, sweeping Toledo Saturday at McGuirk Arena.

It was a total team effort as CMU’s Jordan Bueter, Angie White and Jessica Meichtry all added eight kills apiece for the Chippewas. It was the first time in two years CMU won two straight Mid-American Conference games.

How it happened:

Leading the match 2-0, the Chippewas would take control midway through the third set when an attack error from Toledo gave CMU a 10-9 lead. The Chippewas would use that error to create an 18-10 cushion which the Rockets were unable to recover from. CMU would win the set 25-18.

CMU’s effective passing allowed it to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead in the second set forcing the Rockets to take a timeout early on. The Chippewas wouldn’t look back on their way to another set win.

A serving error by Toledo gave CMU second life and tied the match at 23. CMU sophomore outside hitter Jessica Meichtry recorded a kill on the next play, and an attack error by the Rockets gave CMU a 25-23 win in set one.

What it means:

The Chippewas snapped a two-game losing streak and evened their record in the MAC to 3-3. CMU appears to be playing inspired and with a sense of urgency, winning two matches it would have not been expected to win a year ago.

With two decisive victories in a rollercoaster week like this, CMU can use this momentum moving forward in MAC play.

What’s next:

The Chippewas take their two-game winning streak on the road next weekend for matchups against Miami (Ohio), and Bowling Green. CMU was swept by the RedHawks last season, but defeated the Falcons 3-1 in 2014.
