A Central Michigan University photojournalist placed in the national Hurst Journalism Awards Program.

Out of 127 entries from 68 different universities nationwide, Central Michigan University alumna Andraya Croft placed third in the News and Feature Photojournalism Competition. She was awarded $1,500.

"I couldn't be more thrilled and honored to have been chosen," Croft posted on Facebook. "I'm so thankful for the Journalism program at Central Michigan University and the internships I have received over the past year, including CMU's University Communications and the MLive Muskegon Chronicle."

Participation in the program is open to undergraduate journalism or photojournalism majors enrolled in accredited universities. Entrants must be actively involved in campus media and must have published articles, photographs or produced newscasts or multimedia pieces that can be submitted to the Hearst Journalism Awards program's writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia competitions.

Croft graduated from CMU in December 2015 with a Bachelor of Science and a major in photojournalism.

The top winners, along with the top finalists in the next photo competition, will submit additional photos for the semi-final round of judging in April.

Six finalists will be chosen from that round to compete in the program's National Photojournalism Championship, along with writing, broadcast and multimedia finalists. The championship will be held this June in San Francisco.
