Students who want to help the people of Flint, ride with first responders, hop in a helicopter and volunteer for their community can do it all this Saturday.

The registered student organization Flint Water Crisis Task Force has a plan to take 150 students to Flint this weekend.

They will participate in the city’s annual Touch a Truck event, which puts first responders and their vehicles in touch with the community through free food, music and other activities.

The Central Michigan University students will also be volunteering with Fighting against Blight by boarding up apartments and painting playgrounds.

Crystal Pendergrass, president of the RSO, said helping the people of Flint is not just about the opportunity to volunteer but the people students can help in the process.

“We are really looking for leaders who want to love on the people of Flint and remind them that they are not forgotten,” said the Lake City junior. “This isn’t about us, it’s about them feeling loved in their community and helping them on their feet.”

The first 150 students that sign up can go to Flint for free and receive a free t-shirt. As of Sept. 21, the list has only 30 places left.

To sign up, go to cmich.orgsync.com, register for the volunteer center and look up “Flint service trip.”

Pendergrass said this is not the last of the organization’s volunteer activities. There is another volunteer trip scheduled for the spring semester.
