McLaren Central Michigan Hospital to host ribbon painting event

The City of Mount Pleasant invites its residents to the “Road of Ribbons” event, Sunday, Oct. 14 to help raise awareness for breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 

Participants of the event will paint pink breast cancer ribbons down the length of Maple Street –  between Mission Street and Brown Street – leading up to the Karmanos Morey Cancer Center of the McLaren Central Michigan Hospital. 

According to breastcancer.org, about 1 in every 8 U.S. women – around 12.4 percent – will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her life. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer among women. Although the estimated number of women expected to be diagnosed in 2018 are in the 200,000 range, the number of those diagnosed as been decreasing since 2000. 

Women are not the only victims of breast cancer, but men can develop it too. About 2,550 cases of male breast cancer diagnosis – about 1 in every 1,000 U.S men – are expected to arise in 2018. 

Both men and women are encouraged to perform a monthly self-examination to check for any lumps, discharge and redness. 

Breast cancer ribbon stencils and painting will be set out at 8 a.m. The event will end at 11 a.m.
