CMU softball begins MAC Tournament with 7-1 victory over Ohio

Central Michigan softball (27-24, 18-11) took its first step toward a Mid-American Conference championship with a 7-1 defeat of No. 2 seed Ohio University (23-24, 17-11).

Grace Lehto took the mound for the Chippewas, pitching all seven innings. Lehto (16-11) gave up one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and four base on balls. 

The Chippewas opened the scoring early with an RBI single from Maddie Springer. Two innings later, Kelsey Alexander cleared the bases with a double. With some heads-up base running, CMU's lead was soon 5-0.

Shannon Stein would get her 46th RBI of the season with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 6-0 as Sammi Mills crossed the plate. 

An RBI single from Caroline Spacek would score pinch runner Tori O'Brien and get the Bobcats on the board with a score of 6-1. Lehto would pitch herself out of the inning with back to back strikeouts to end the inning. 

The Chippewas would add on one more run in the seventh with an RBI single from Coberley. 

What's Next

The Chippewas advance to the winners bracket against the winner of Bowling Green and Miami Redhawks and are set to play Friday May 13 at 3:30 p.m.
