CMU volleyball sweep MAC West Player of the Week honors

After securing two wins against rival Western Michigan over the weekend, senior outside hitter Mallory Hernandez, sophomore libero Aly Gurtiza and freshman setter Claire Ammeraal earned Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors. 

This is the first time that the Chippewas have swept all three MAC player of the week honors this season. 

Hernandez received MAC West Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. She led the offensive effort in the wins against WMU, putting back-to-back games with 20 plus kills. She ended the weekend with 46 kills on a .372 hitting percentage along with nine blocks.

After setting up the offensive attack all weekend, Ammeraal earned MAC West Setter Player of the Week honor for the second time this season. In the first match against WMU, Ammeraal completed her third triple-double of the season with 10 kills, 45 assists and 13 digs. She ranks seventh in the nation in triple-doubles this season. Ammeraal ended the weekend with 18 kills, 96 assists and 27 digs. 

On the defensive side, Gurtiza totaled 60 digs over the weekend, as she earned MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. This is the second time Gurtiza has earned the award this season. 

With the series sweep over WMU, the Chippewas earned their spot in the MAC tournament. CMU is 18-10 overall and 11-6 in conference play. 

The Chippewas will end regular season play when they face off against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
