The Central Michigan women’s basketball team advanced to 3-1 with its 87-54 win over the Detroit Mercy Titans on Wednesday evening.

“Our mentality against Butler was super good for 40 minutes, so we just wanted to carry that into practice and tonight as well,” head coach Kristin Haynie said.

After a hot start in the first quarter, shooting 5-6 from the three-point line, CMU never looked back. By the end of the first half, the Chippewas led by 18 points and were shooting nearly 47% from the field.

The Chippewas were able to have three players in double figures on Wednesday's matchup, including sophomore guard Madi Morson, senior forward Nekhu Mitchell and sophomore forward Ayanna-Sarai Darrington.

Haynie highlighted the other players who were key to the win.

“We were super happy with Lilah Turnbull,” Haynie said. “For her to come in and play how she played, being locked in on both ends of the floor. I’m super proud of her for coming in and staying confident.”

She also mentioned sophomore guard Jayda Mosely and sophomore forward Riley Smith, both of whom contributed nine points, as well as senior forward Demetria Prewitt, who added eight.

“It was a good, well-rounded game for our team,” Haynie said.

CMU also had a season high of 22 assists on Wednesday, a stat that reflected its offensive performance.

Morson led the team with 21 points and was 4-7 from the three-point line. Mitchell was able to add 17 for the Chippewas and Darrington was close behind with 16.

Prewitt crashed the boards well, picking up nine rebounds.

“Keeping that same mentality that we had at Butler and here tonight against Detroit and just being consistent will be awesome," Haynie said.

CMU will take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers at McGuirk Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m.
