Angie Thomas, award-winning American author of New York Times best-seller "The Hate U Give," will speak at Central Michigan University at 8 p.m. on April 8 in Warriner Hall Platcha Auditorium.

Thomas will discuss her novel "The Hate U Give" and the culture, politics and development that inspired it, with a period to answer questions afterward.

The event is hosted by the CMU Speaker Series, which aims to bring a diverse group of speakers to educate and entertain the campus community.

"The speaker series committee has established themes for each year," said psychology department faculty Kyle Scherr and committee member of the series. "The theme for 2019 is wellness and we thought that Angie Thomas will provide an engaging talk that promotes societal wellness."

The committee has invited Thomas and positive psychologist David Lerner to headline this year's CMU Speaker Series.

All Speaker Series events are free and open to the public.

"We hope that Angie Thomas’s presentation will stimulate students’ self-reflection about their role in effecting meaningful societal change," Scherr said. "In the end, we hope students and those attending will have a deeper appreciation for their role in improving the wellbeing of others."
