I sat on the edge of my bed, one hand grabbing my chest to hold my broken heart together, the other catching hot tears as they fell from my face.

The long, rattling ride up the Moore Hall elevator did nothing to calm my nerves. Little did I know, I would take this ride to the fourth floor more times than I could count during my time at Central Michigan University.Ever since I was I was young I had a fascination with newspapers.

At its April 4 meeting, the Academic Senate at Central Michigan University voted to add a new University Program category requiring students to take a course in non-race based discrimination. We think this addition will benefit students and the entire Central Michigan University community by creating a more inclusive campus — one of the university's core values. The new category, subgroup IV-D, will require students starting in 2019 to take a class focused on discrimination issues regarding gender, sex, identity, sexuality, sexual orientation, religion or disability. The new requirement will not force students to take additional general education credits — which was many academic senators' major critique earlier this semester.

For fraternities and sororities at Central Michigan University, the beginning of Spring marks a special time of the year: Greek Week. The annual week-long fundraiser, April 2-7, will bring social Greek organizations together as they compete to raise money and awareness for a charitable cause. We think Greek Week epitomizes what it means to be a member of a Greek organization — unity and philanthropy. In that spirit of unity, we also think Greek Week is a good time to discuss an important issue that affects the image of the university and Greek community. There are five "unaffiliated fraternities" that operate outside the purview of CMU – Alpha Chi Rho, Theta Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Chi. According to the university website, these five fraternities are no longer recognized by CMU due to actions by members that violated established policies.
