Volleyball drops to ninth in the MAC after winless weekend

After being swept by Western Michigan Friday, the Central Michigan volleyball team finished its Mid-American conference road trip with a 3-1 loss at Northern Illinois on Saturday night.

With two games left in the regular season, the Chippewas (9-17, 3-11 MAC) are tied with Eastern Michigan for ninth place in the MAC. The Broncos improved to 10-17 overall and 5-9 in the conference with its 2-0 run last weekend.

Head coach Mike Gawlik said the Chippewas were disappointed after Friday's loss and needed to adjust their mindset heading into Saturday.

CMU opened its match against MAC West-leading NIU with a 25-23 victory in the first set. The Huskies responded winning the next three sets, 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 to claim the match.

"They're a hard team to beat but that's the Mid-American Conference and that's what we signed up for," Gawlik said.

The Chippewas will play Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti. The Chippewas defeated the Eagles in five sets earlier in the season.

CMU takes on Ohio (14-12, 10-4 MAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at McGuirk Arena to close out the regular season.
