University seeks student input on new Code of Conduct

Director of the Office of Student Conduct Thomas Idema Jr. announced that the university wants student input on the new changes to the Student Code of Conduct at the Student Government Association Meeting on Monday, Sept. 28.
“We've made one big step this year, but we want to keep making tweaks, you know, improvements, things like that, and we're going to need your opinion and your thoughts," Idema said.
Idema said the Code of Conduct has not been updated in several years. Central Michigan University Board of Trustees officially approved it on Sept. 24.
At the Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Erica Johnson, associate vice president of student affairs, spoke on these updates. She said the university's goal was not just to update the language, but instead to encourage students to learn, accept responsibility and engage within the various communities that CMU has to offer.
"Ultimately, these revisions strengthen our community by creating more intentional opportunities for learning through accountability and student development," said Johnson.
The updated Code of Conduct can be found on the CMU website.
Other Business:
SGA Chief of Staff Jack Gulisano outlined expectations for registered student organization (RSO) representatives' attendance. After last week's general assembly meeting, many RSO representatives left before the House meeting began. Gulisano said representatives are expected to attend for the entire meeting; that includes committee meetings, general assembly and House.
Additionally, RSOs are allowed two excused absences, and to be excused, they must email SGA with a reason. RSO’s are allowed to have multiple proxies if needed.
CMU Dining will be presenting to hear from students about their concerns and questions regarding dining on campus at the next SGA meeting on Oct. 5.
