Gymnasts near 196 mark in season's best performance

The CMU gymnastics team’s highest score of 2009 was a 195.675 in the Eagle Invite on March 7. The team eclipsed that with five freshmen in the lineup Sunday in DeKalb, Ill., against Northern Illinois. CMU (9-2, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) won the meet 195.85-191.1, eclipsing its best score of the season by 0.875 (State of Michigan Classic, Feb. 7) and sweeping all four events.

Gymnastics team looks to rebound from balance beam problems

A white 8-by-11 sign hangs from the door of the gymnastics room inside Rose Arena as the team prepares for its meet against Western Michigan. It reads in big black letters, “Kent St. What did you do?” The note from coach Jerry Reighard, also adorned in several other locations around the practice facility, was meant to question his gymnasts’ efforts following last weekend’s loss to rival Kent State as it hosts WMU at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Gymnastics team adds difficulty to uneven bars routines

With a blitz down the mat, freshman gymnast Kari Dieffenderfer hits the springboard and propels her body horizontal past the lower bar, clearing it to grab hold of the upper bar. Her uneven bars routine begins with several passes around the bar; she pauses briefly in a pencil-thin position, her feet pointed sharply in the air as she controls her momentum and freezes in mid-air. With a twist of her wrists, she reverses her position on the bar and begins to rotate in the opposite direction.

Gymnastics team wins State of Michigan Classic, knocks off No. 21 Michigan State

The CMU gymnastics team won its first State of Michigan Classic of the new millenium in what will be the event’s last year. With a score of 194.975, the team beat No. 21 Michigan State, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan on Sunday in Kalamazoo. It scored more than a point higher than last year’s Classic (193.925).
